Early in the morning of December 21, 2021, Crenshaw County Narcotics Investigator Jonathan Pitts conducted a traffic stop on South Main Street in Dozier.

Devon Carnley admitted to Pitts that he had narcotics in the vehicle according to the CCSO. Carnley refused to exit the vehicle upon request and left the scene.

Pitts pursued Carnley onto School Street and then Highway 29 north where speeds exceeded 100 mph.

Brantley Police Department joined the pursuit before ending on Dozier Road.

Carnley exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Covington County Deputy Greg Palmer and the Covington County K9 Tracking team assisted law enforcement on the scene in the search for Carnley.

Ventress K9 Tracking Team also assisted in the search.

The search continued for four hours before concluding with Carnley in custody.

Carnely was booked into the Crenshaw County jail and charged with attempt to elude, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of synthetic urine.

Sheriff Terry Mears expressed his appreciation for Pitts and the outstanding work during the incident.

“I want to thank Brantley Police Department, Covington County Sheriff’s Office, Covington County Deputy Greg Palmer, Covington County K9 Tracking Team, Ventress K9 Tracking Team, and the Crenshaw County Deputies and Reserve Deputies who responded to assist in the search. This took a team effort and everyone did an outstanding job of getting the job done,” Mears said.
