Property owners in Crenshaw County who have not yet paid their property taxes run the risk of having their property auctioned off by the county if taxes are not paid by March 31.

Samantha Smith, Chief Revenue Clerk for Crenshaw County, said as of Jan 2, $241,499.72 in outstanding property taxes have yet to be paid by Crenshaw County property owners.

Smith said delinquent tax notices were mailed Tuesday, Jan. 11, and those who have yet to pay their taxes will be charged a $5 late fee and have 2 percent interest added to the total amount due in taxes. The delinquent amount is good through Feb. 28. If still not paid by this date, probate notices will be mailed out the first week of March, which will include higher interest and additional late fees.

Property owners who have still not paid their taxes by March 31, will have their property advertised in The Luverne Journal for three weeks in April. Property owners who still have not paid their tax bill prior to May 31 will have their property sold at the annual delinquent property sale. Payments can be made in the office located at 29 S Glenwood Ave, online, by mail or by phone. Office hours are Monday thru Friday 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. Online payments can be made through the county’s website, www.crenshawcountyalonline.com.
