BREAKING NEWS: Investigators searching for drive-by shooting suspect

After a string of what may be related drive-by shootings in the Lapine area Monday, Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Investigators are searching for a suspect they believe may be involved.
According to Sheriff’s investigator Chris Stewart, one shooting occurred just off Montgomery Highway, behind Nelson’s Grocery in Lapine around 2:30 a.m. Afterward, a resident in the Helicon community and another on Ryals Road off Burgamy Swamp Road in Lapine reported two more shootings that morning.
“There was one incident in the Helicon community,” Stewart said. “Technically, this is the Lapine area. This incident happened around 5:30 a.m. The Helicon and Ryals Road calls came after that one.”
Investigators have a lead on a suspect, Stewart explained, but are withholding information because the investigation is still in progress.
The Sheriff’s office believes the shootings are related, Stewart noted, and seem to involve persons known to the suspect.
“These were not random houses,” Stewart said. “This individual appears to have some bad blood between him and another gentleman or several gentlemen and he’s targeting their houses. He’s not picking random houses; he’s intentionally picking them.”
Law enforcement officers believe the suspect is living in Montgomery and may have once been part of the Crenshaw County community.
Investigators are asking community members who may know something about the shootings to contact the Sheriff’s office. Under no circumstances should a citizen attempt to engage someone who may have been part of the incidents, Stewart instructed.
“If anyone has information that can help us pinpoint who is doing this, they should call the Sheriff’s office and speak to a deputy or an investigator,” Stewart said. “If you encounter someone you believe to be involved in these incidents, do not confront them. Call 911. He is considered to be armed and dangerous.”
