Crenshaw Christian Academy’s Sommer Elisabeth Cornelius along with Mackenzie Renea Daniel, Micaiah Grace June, and Terrence DeAndre Smith from Luverne High School are among 40 high school seniors selected to receive a $2,500 scholarship from the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority (AMEA).
Since 1992, the AMEA and its members have provided over $3 million in scholarships to graduating high school seniors. To be eligible for the AMEA scholarships, a student’s family must receive electric service from an AMEA member city electric utility and the student must be planning to attend an Alabama college, university, or vocational school. This requirement ensures that the scholarships are being awarded to local students who are invested in the community and plan to contribute to Alabama’s economic growth.
Fred D. Clark, Jr., AMEA president & CEO, emphasized the importance of the scholarship program as a way to support education initiatives that contribute to making the state economically competitive.
“We take our role as a good corporate citizen seriously,” said Clark. “That’s why we, along with our members, support education initiatives, like the AMEA Scholarship Program, that contribute to making our state economically competitive. We congratulate this year’s scholarship winners.”
Elliott Jones, a member of the AMEA Board of Directors, shares Clark’s sentiments and emphasized the board’s commitment to supporting both their local community and the global community through the provision of scholarships to high school seniors. Jones acknowledges the significant contributions these students are poised to make in the community and in the world and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play a role in their success.
“As community leaders we must recognize that education is the key that unlocks the door of endless opportunity for our graduates,” Jones said. “As we award scholarships to our senior high students, we are investing in the future of our community and the world at large. Let us continue to empower our youth through education and inspire them to achieve greatness.”
