Rutledge resident, George Pouncey, 45, has been arrested in connection with a July 23 Rutledge shooting.
Pouncey was arrested after an investigation into a traffic accident involving a gunshot victim. At approximately 1:40 a.m., Crenshaw County E-911 received a distressing report of the accident on Lee Street in the Rutledge Community.
Sheriff’s Deputy Jordan Arrighi arrived at the scene and discovered the traffic accident victim, Wesley Williamson, 45. Williamson, also of Rutledge, was treated by Luverne Rescue personnel and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Witness testimony identified Pouncey, who had left the scene, as the shooting victim. He returned to the scene and met with officers from the Luverne Police Department. Pouncey was transported to the Crenshaw Community Hospital by Luverne Rescue. Both he and Williamson were treated and released that morning.
According to Sheriff’s Investigator, Lieutenant Chris Stewart, Pouncey was charged with criminal mischief in the first degree and second-degree reckless endangerment.
“Pouncey was arrested based on the statements of Williamson and the witness who was with him in the vehicle,” Stewart said. “It is unusual that the shooting ‘victim’ ends up being the one arrested. But, after presenting everything to the assistant district attorney, the charges were brought against Pouncey as being the primary aggressor.”
Sheriff Terry Mears acknowledged the potential for additional charges. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, no further information is available. This article will be updated as new information becomes available.
