Crenshaw County varsity football looked like victory Friday, with all three high school teams winning conference games.

Luverne School

The Luverne Tigers defeated Barbour County 42-0 in their first 2A Region 3 game. The win placed the Tigers first in the region, just ahead of hometown rival Highland Home.

In the first quarter, quarterback Mason Miller completed an 18-yard pass to Tyler Carter who carried it just past the 40-yard line. Later a 12-yard pass completion to Dee Smith enabled tight end Myrez Gross to find the endzone after completing a 60-yard run for the first touchdown.

Miller launched a 19-yard touchdown pass to defensive end Dante Smith to score again and after another touchdown, the score held at 21-0 just before the end of the first quarter, when a 22-yard touchdown pass from Miller to Smith gained another Tiger touchdown.

With the Tigers leading the Eagles 28-0, A 10-yard run brought the Tigers within reach of another touchdown earned when Miller completed a 52-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Elliott Harris.

An 18-yard touchdown pass to Smith, who found the end zone, brought the score to 42-0 in the fourth quarter.

Miller, Smith, and Gross stood out as the Tigers’ top three offensive players. Miller was instrumental for four touchdowns, with 141 passing yards. Smith completed two receptions over 41 yards, participating in two touchdowns and Gross made touchdown rushes for two scores, with two carries and 67 rushing yards.

On defense, john Aus’ten McMillian, Aderion Foster and Alijah Hurst stood out to help the Tigers win another shutout victory.

Luverne will host Horseshoe Bend at home on Sept. 15.

Highland Home School

The Highland Home Flying Squadron traveled to Goshen where they met and defeated the Eagles 42-21 in the first 2A Region 3 game of the season. The win places Highland Home at second in the region.

The Squadron put the first points on the board, followed by another touchdown that held the halftime score at 22-0. Teams volleyed the ball as the Rebels challenged the Squadron, with Highland Home leading 42-14 with 9 minutes left on the clock.

With one minute left in the game, the Squadron rested their starters, allowing Goshen to score again before the clock ran out.

The Squadron will face the 2-1 Lanett Panthers at home field on Sept. 15 to defend their as yet undefeated season record.

Brantley School

The Bulldogs, now 2-1, traveled to Butler County Friday to defeat McKenzie 30-28 in their second region victory. The win placed Brantley in third place among 1A Region 2 teams.

Quarterback Jon Harper Kilcrease completed a 34-yard touchdown pass early in the first quarter to place the Bulldogs on the board. An 11-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Daylan Davis brought the Tigers back into the endzone to end the first quarter with Brantley ahead.

Early in the second quarter, a 44-yard pass to wide receiver Axton Saunders gained another Bulldog touchdown, bringing the score to 18-7. Davis found the endzone again, followed by running back Trey Pitman, who received a 17-yard pass for another touchdown.

Kilcrease, Davis and Saunders ranked as Brantley’s top three offensive players, with Kilcrease making 315 passing yards. Kilcrease and Saunders were also counted among the top three defensive players along with AJ Kilpatrick.

The Bulldogs travel to defend their 2-1 record against 3-0 Elba.
