The Luverne Tigers hosted their homecoming football game on Sep. 29 against the Calhoun Tigers and emerged victorious by a landslide win.
Luverne held Calhoun with a 35-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and 42-0 lead throughout the second and third. During the fourth quarter, one touchdown was allowed leaving the final score for the game at 42-0.
The Luverne Tigers head coach Ed Rigby said he was impressed with how his athletes performed despite the distractions homecoming week can sometimes provide.
“It was homecoming which is huge day full of a lot of events and that can be a huge distraction, but the guys handled it really well,” Rigby said. “The kids played hard, and we made it out with no injuries and we were able to play a lot of kids which is always a positive.”
Rigby gave credit to several of his athletes who showed exceptional skill on the field including the following players:
Mason Miller No. 10 who had six completions for seven attempts, 104 rushing yards and four touchdowns and Myrez Gross No. 7 who had two rushing touchdowns and six carries for 70 yards. Deontae ‘Tiger’ Harris No. 4, Tyler Carter No. 5, Joshua Bearden No. 8, and Carson Simmons No. 15 all secured one receiving touchdown each.
Luverne was led in tackles by Dante Smith No. 2 led who had eight tackles and three tackles for loss and Jackson Ballard No. 18 who had seven tackles and one sack.
Rigby said he is proud of his athletes and looking forward to the next game on the Tigers’ schedule- a rivalry game against the Highland Home Flying Squadron.
“We jumped on them [Calhoun] really quickly and were able to do what we wanted to do and now its on to the next one,” Rigby said. “We’re 6-0 and so is Highland so this is a huge region game and we feel good about it. The bottom line is we have to do everything in our power to go out there and compete. It ought to be a heck of a showdown.”
The Tigers will host the Squadron at Glen Daniel Stadium on Oct. 6.
