This week’s Luverne Journal “Pet of the Week” feature pays tribute to the life of Newts, a cherished mix-breed pup who recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge at over 22 years old.
While his passing leaves a void in the hearts of his family and furry siblings, they take solace in knowing he is in a place where he no longer faces the pain of his health issues.
According to his owner, Rocky Scholfield, Newts battled heartworms in his later years, a condition that left his heart damaged despite successful treatment. Alongside heart issues, he also coped with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), requiring multiple prescription medications.
Newts loved being pampered and enjoyed being cradled like a baby. His mischievous spirit found delight in wrapping himself in bedcovers, playfully snatching them off the bed to capture his owner’s attention.
One of Newts’ favorite pastimes was embarking on “culvert missions” during meal times, where he cunningly attempted to sneak food off his owner’s plate.
Newt’s owner said that when he first got sick, they established a routine that worked great and he was a very happy boy right up to the end.
The Luverne Journal invites pet owners to enter their pets for a chance to be featured as the “Pet of the Week,” “Pet of the Season,” or even the “Pet of the Year.” Sponsored by Dr. Alethea Gammage and Crenshaw Animal Clinic, the winner of the quarterly “Pet of the Season” contest receives a personalized prize package valued at $250 and the opportunity to compete for the grand prize and earn the coveted title of “Crenshaw Animal Clinic Pet of the Year”.
