An Editorial Opinion of The Luverne Journal

Social media platforms allow users to share their day-to-day experiences — where they go, who they spend time with and even what they eat.

But long before social media platforms provided space for life’s everyday happenings, The Luverne Journal published “Local Happenings” by Society Editor Mrs. Lila D. Funda burk for readers to enjoy.

On Feb. 2, 1933, The Journal printed news that the Henderson basketball team defeated Glenwood in a Thursday night game. The news followed an announcement that Wednesday night prayer meeting was led by P.B. Curtis, mentioned just above a sentence describing Mrs. Winnie Davis’s return home after many months of visiting her daughter, Mrs. O.W. Everage in Andalusia.

Alongside the sports news and accounts of city leaders was the “Glenwood” section, where readers learned that Mable Warren was hostess at a birthday party celebrating her 12h birthday.

The page reads much like a social media newsfeed, with life’s highlights nestled snugly among advertisements for the latest and greatest health supplement.

A recent effort to compile historic volumes for digital storage led the Journal staff on a trip down memory lane, an adventure revealing the names of bygone generations whose descendants still operate in and around Luverne today.
