Studying the lives of Bible characters is a truly fascinating journey. The Bible accurately records the successes of our favorite spiritual heroes, but it also just as accurately documents some of their darkest moments of sin and failure. 

God’s word never shies away from showing us the good, the bad, or the ugly. Bible greats like Abraham, Moses, David and Paul weren’t perfect people but thankfully these spiritual giants knew God’s grace, and they were able to rise above their failures. These memorable people remind us we can overcome too. 

The apostle Peter is one of the most noteworthy people in our New Testament. He was a disciple, apostle, great preacher, elder in the church and an inspired writer of two Bible books. There are many ways we should emulate Peter’s worthy example, however there are also some striking ways we should be unlike Peter. 

As you might remember, he actually denied the Lord three times (cf. Matthew 26:33–35; Mark 14:29–31; John 13:37–38). Peter repented of failing the Lord, and he went on to do great things for Jesus. Aside from that failure, there were several other moments in Peter’s life when he actually told Jesus no. 

Take a few moments to read the following passages: Matthew 16:22; Matthew 26:33-35; Acts 10:14. The words of Jesus were clear in these passages, yet Peter foolishly thought he knew better. Of course, Peter was wrong because Jesus is always right!.

Moments like these were the exception in Peter’s spiritual journey. Peter was a man who deeply loved the Lord, and he possessed a heart that wanted to honor the teachings of God. Let’s be like Peter in that regard, and let’s never say no to something God’s word teaches!
