Do I Practice What I Preach?
By Dean Kelly
Sometimes things happen. Sometimes they cause us some anguish or consternation. They can be totally out of the blue and can make us reel a bit as we consider them. It is at moments like this that we must ask ourselves, “Do I practice what I preach?”
Listen to these verses, and see if we can truthfully answer that we do:
“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble (Matthew 6:28-34).
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).
“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5::6-7).
Do we practice what we preach? We need to meet Jesus at the cross in obedience, but we also need to come to the cross in faith and cast our burdens at Jesus feet!
