This week, the Luverne Veterinary Hospital shines its spotlight on Smoki, a 10-year-old blue heeler who calls Glenwood home. Smoki lives with his owner, Amanda Lowe and his story is one of resilience, intelligence and unwavering loyalty.
Smoki’s journey took a challenging turn last year when he had to undergo surgery to remove both of his eyes due to glaucoma and the rupture of one eye. Despite this life-altering event, Smoki has proven that he is as adaptable as he is brave.
“He’s my special boy,” Lowe said.
In true heeler fashion, Smoki thrives on staying ahead and keeping his owner in line, acting as the “chief supervisor” of the household. Though he’s blind, Smoki’s sharp senses and quick wit make it seem as though he can still see.
Smoki’s talents include sitting and shaking on command, and he has an undeniable knack for getting his way.
“Smoki believes he’s the owner,” Lowe said. He’s protective to a fault, barking to ward off anyone who gets too close to his beloved human. At home, he claims the top of the couch as his throne, sitting there like royalty surveying his domain.
This special pup has a big appetite for chicken, his favorite treat, and ends each day snuggled up with Lowe, ever the loyal guardian.
