Late Monday, Luverne High School administration posted on social media to assure parents classes were scheduled as normal for Tuesday amidst rumors of a potential shooting threat.

According to Luverne Police Captain Mason Adcock, the department is investigating the rumors but can confirm no actual threat exists.

“Luverne Police Department has received unconfirmed information regarding a threat or threats of a school shooting at Luverne School campus this week,” Adcock stated in a release to The Luverne Journal. “This information has come from different sources and contained conflicting information. Officers have investigated each source and have found no credible threat at this time or from the start. This information has been shared with school officials.”

The schools’ post around 9:30 p.m. Monday received criticism from readers who requested additional information. That post was later removed and read as follows:

“Students and parents, we are aware of the posts that have been going around on social media tonight. Law enforcement inLuverne and I will be on hand and vigilant tomorrow. School safety is our priority and we want you to have every confidence that your child is safe at Luverne School. Thank you.”

Adcock said social media rumors and conjecturing were, so far, proving untrue. 

“The information is believed to be untrue and distorted as it has been shared throughout social media channels,” Adcock said. “There will be a heightened law enforcement presence at Luverne School campus until an investigation is completed as a precautionary measure.”

In a Tuesday morning post, Crenshaw County Schools’ administrators assured the community that student safety remains a top priority.

“Safety is our priority,” administrators wrote. “Making threats against schools is not a joke and can have life-threatening consequences. Even false threats can bring serious legal action and school suspension or expulsion.

“Parents, please talk to your kids and help them understand the seriousness of the issue. Let’s work together to keep our schools safe. Start the conversation today.”
