Hubert Tomberlin, 91, a resident of Luverne, passed away peacefully at Troy Health and Rehabilitation on Friday, Jan. 10. Funeral services for Hubert will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, from the Chapel of Turners Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Hogwood. He will then be laid to rest beside his wife in Darien Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Hubert worked his way up to upper management at the Pepsi Bottling plant in Luverne and enjoyed not only his work and those he worked with, but also the many trips to see much of the United States that came with it. After his retirement, he was able to continue his travels over the years. He loved spending time in Nashville with his son as well as many other trips with both his family and some dear friends. Their trips included everything from southern staples like Gatlinburg and Branson to exploring the West in Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and Los Angeles, as well as the nation’s capital in Washington, D.C. and Mexico. However, it was his frequent trips to his place in Freeport, Florida where he could net fish with his family and friends always remained a true highlight for him.
When Hubert wasn’t traipsing all over the United States or meeting country stars, you could usually find him tending to the gorgeous yard around his home that he was always so proud of. His talent for gardening and landscaping was one he also never minded sharing with others as friends and neighbors often called him for advice on their own. He was also a longtime member of South Luverne Baptist Church, but above all he was certainly a cherished member of his community throughout his long life. He was famous for his open, friendly, and welcoming demeanor because he was always the same with everyone, whether it was the clerk at his local store or the many famous country stars he met through his son. His humility and generosity endeared him to all who met him as he left an indelible impression on all of them. Simply put, to know Hubert was to love him and there are few people that can truthfully be said about. That is the kind of legacy we should all hope to leave behind after such a long life.
Hubert was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Betty Pritchett Tomberlin; parents, Wilkes and Earsie Lee Tompkins Tomberlin and siblings, Mildred Tomberlin and Hayward Tomberlin. He is survived by his cherished son, Bobby Tomberlin; grandson, Austin (Sophie) Tomberlin; great-grandson, Noah; brother-in-law, Jerry Pritchett; sister-in-law, Patsy (Oren) Anderson and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.
Active pallbearers were Alan Carpenter, Darrell Jackson, Jerry Pritchett, John Ganey, Morris Tate and Will Headley.
