May 5 marked the first annual Senior Citizen Day celebrations by the Crenshaw County Extension Service. The event was held at the Tom Harbin Farm Center located at 816 Airport Road in Luverne.

Amanda Evans, Anita West and Kristen Sanders were the three familiar faces putting this event together.

The festive event offered bingo, checkers, painting, a corn hole toss, horse shoes, and an egg race and toss as well as a ball toss with a pick your own prize barrel.

Luverne Health and Rehabilitation had lawn bowling that was a big hit with everyone.

There was a giant metal rooster, hand puzzles of various sizes and shapes, free popcorn and a free blood pressure check.

Several card games were on displace for the enjoyment of the seniors; such as a standard deck of cards, Rook and Phase 10. The board game Battleship was also displayed.

Also, under the shelter of the Emmett C. Strickland Farmers Market Pavilion, a cake walk for the guests.

The D.J. got the crowd moving with the sounds of classic rock and Motown favorites.

There were door prizes, free gift bags and a free lunch of hamburger steak with white gravy, white rice and butterbeans seasoned with ham.

Several local organizations set up tables at the event. Among those were Viva Health, as well as Comfort Care of Greenville, with free bags and pens. The County Extension office was there with free bags and note pads. The Kids and Kin program gave away information about their group along with free children’s books, ‘Pete the Cat’ being among the favorites. A few others also set up tables to offer information to the seniors.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and all are looking forward to this new event happening next year in Luverne.
