Brantley High School varsity football traveled to Houston County for Friday night’s game against the Lions and secured a 33-7 win.
“We have several kids that are starting for the first time and still have a lot of learning to do,” said Roland Jones, Jr., Brantley head coach. “The sky’s the limit if we keep working every day.”
Jones said he is working to keep the team grounded given their success thus far.
“We preach to take it one game at a time, everybody we play wants to beat us and it will make their season; if they do, I tell them we have to think about a ladder – you can’t skip a step,” he said. “We have a big group of seniors, and they all play a part in leadership.”
Despite their ability to keep Houston County from scoring until the third quarter, Jones said mistakes were made, and the team has been working this week to correct them before their battle with McKenzie.
“We are trying to fix our mistakes from Friday night’s game against Houston County, and if we can fix them and install a good game plan for McKenzie it will help with success,” Jones said.
Bulldogs quarterback Jayden Parks went 12-of-16 passing for 156 yards and two touchdowns.
Robert Shine finished with 101 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Jon Bush led the receiving corps with four receptions for 37 yards. Kaleb Weed also had four catches for 27 yards.
The Bulldogs dominated the game, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter. Kedrick Brown ran in a 4-yard touchdown, Robert Shine scored a 1-yard touchdown, and Brown caught a 23-yard touchdown pass by Parks. Parks made two of the three extra point attempts.
Shine added an 18-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Parks’ extra point kick was good to widen the Bulldogs’ lead, 27-0.
Parks extended the lead in the fourth quarter with a 41-yard touchdown run.
Brantley will play McKenzie at home tomorrow night at 7. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series against the Tigers, 38-17-2.
