A single-vehicle traffic crash claimed the life of pedestrian, Joseph J. Hart, 52, Friday evening.
Hart, an Andalusia resident, was struck at approximately 7:17 p.m. by the 2019 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Dozier resident, Connie L. Qualls, 51.
According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sergeant Jeremy Burkett , ALEA Troopers responded to the crash, where Hart was found to have sustained fatal injuries.
“Hart was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Burkett said in a press release issued by ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division Troy Post Saturday.
The crash occurred approximately four miles east of Andalusia, in Covington County, on U.S. Highway 84 near the 136-mile marker, Burkett said.
ALEA Troopers continue to investigate the fatality. Nothing further is available while the investigation continues.
Kendra McKinney, ALEA senior trooper, cautions motorists to be aware of road conditions and to watch out for pedestrians in Alabama roadways.
“Motorists should be aware of pedestrians everywhere,” McKinney said.
ALEA offers guidance for motorists regarding pedestrians in or near the roadway including:
- Look for pedestrians everywhere. They may not be walking where they should be or may be hard to see — especially in poorly lit conditions, including dusk/dawn hours, at night and in inclement weather, including fog;
- Always stop for pedestrians in crosswalks or where pedestrian signs are posted;
- Never pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks. They may be stopped to allow individuals to cross the street;
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs; and
- Follow speed limits, slow down around pedestrians.
