Alabama Hall of Fame Coach Wayne Grant announced his retirement from Crenshaw Christian Academy on Friday.
Grant indicated that retirement would allow him time to pursue new experiences.
“I have the desire to do some things and experience some things that I have not had the time to do up to this point in his life,” Grant said.
Grant has coached for 32 years and been on the sidelines at CCA for the last five, leading the Cougars to a 45-13 record and a 78% winning percentage, ranking among the highest in the school’s history. His football teams have won three Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) region titles and made an appearance in the state championship twice, ultimately bringing the title back to Crenshaw Christian in 2020.
Grant also served as athletic director and oversaw a successful five year period in Cougar athletics where state titles were won in weightlifting, cheerleading, and JV volleyball. Under his leadership the Cougars were state runners up in varsity women’s basketball and three time runners up in varsity softball. Each program also enjoyed playoff success and multiple All-Star and All-State selections.
Headmaster Becky Bagget and the board of directors wished coach Grant and his family well in a release to The Luverne Journal, “Please join us in wishing Coach Grant and his wife Melissa the best in their future. We also ask that you hold Crenshaw Christian in your prayers as we seek God’s guidance on finding our next athletic leader and football coach.”
