Kevin Bowen of Luverne has been named to the University of Alabama (UA) summer 2023 president’s list.

The University recognized Bowen in a Sept. 7 announcement. He is a 2009 graduate of Highland Home School who has served in the US Air Force and is currently a Sergeant with the Luverne Police Department and with the US Air National Guard.

Bowen is a senior at UA, completing online courses and pursuing a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and criminology with a minor concentration in conflict resolution. He made the decision to go back to school to help his children understand that it is never too late to pursue educational goals.

“I’ve always wanted to get my degree, but I’ve always put it off,” Bowen said. “I just wanted to show my kids that it doesn’t matter how old you get, you can still go back and get your degree.

Driven students like Bowen are enrolled in UA’s more than 70 undergraduate programs and 12 colleges and schools. A total of 414 students, including Bowen, who were enrolled during the summer semester were named to the dean’s list with an academic record of 3.5 (or above) or the president’s list with an academic record of 4.0 (all A’s). 

Bowen said online classes help the goal feel more attainable. As an officer working at night, online flexibility enables him to take classes at any time.

“It works for me since I work the night shift and sleep during the day most of the time,” Bowen said.

The UA dean’s and president’s lists recognize full-time undergraduate students but does not apply to graduate students or undergraduate students who take less than a full course load.

Bowen said he has made the university’s dean’s list every semester. This summer, he was named to the president’s list for the first time.
