Mary Ann Holmes Powell, 78, a resident of Brantley, passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, Jan. 25, while surrounded by her family. Funeral services for Mary Ann were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Harry Meadows officiating and Aaron Hall delivering the eulogy. Interment followed in Bullock Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Mary Ann was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who loved nothing more than spending time with her family. She understood that there was no greater treasure she possessed than her family. She especially cherished her role as “Grandmama” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, or, as she referred to them, her “little ones.” Mary Ann was a kind and generous soul and was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor. Her family will testify that she made the best fried chicken and tomato gravy you could ever be fortunate enough to taste. She also enjoyed the beautiful flowers her husband so lovingly kept planted for her throughout the years. Words cannot express how much Mary Ann meant to her entire family or how much she will be missed, but they will find comfort in all of the wonderful memories they made together over the years.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, George C. and Ruby Dorman Holmes, and sister, Mamie Tipton. She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Clayton Lawayne Powell; children, Connie (David) Tisdale, Rhonda (Todd) Johnson, and Cameron (Aaron) Hall; stepsons, Richard (Nancy) Powell, and Chris (Sunni) Kimbro; grandchildren, Zach (Kimberly) Johnson, Zeth (Kelsey) Johnson, Maggie (Hunter) Steed, Elleigh (Joshua) Reynolds, Charlie Tisdale, Sallie Hall, Zeke Johnson, Lizzie Hall, and Millie Hall; great-grandchildren, Liam Johnson, William Clayton Reynolds, Witt Steed, Sadie Johnson, Dutton Johnson, and Mary Caroline Reynolds; siblings, Bill (Ramona) Holmes, Jack (Tyease) Holmes, and Sandra (Walter) Dickey; mother-in-law, Eulene Powell; sister-in-law, Myra (Howard) Compton; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Active pallbearers were Zach Johnson, Zeth Johnson, Charlie Tisdale, Zeke Johnson, Hunter Steed, and Joshua Reynolds.
The family would like to thank Encompass Home Health, Aveanna Hospice, and Dr. Charles Tompkins and his staff for their care and support during this time.
