High school seniors across the state had the opportunity to submit their college applications for free October 18 – 22, 2021. Crenshaw County students took advantage of the opportunity.

“Our seniors in Crenshaw County are amazing. They completed over 475 college applications. It was important we took time to do this at school to make sure they have all the opportunities in this world they deserve. We encourage them, we help them, we support them, and we praise them for their accomplishments,” said Haley Kilcrease, Crenshaw County career coach.

The Alabama Department of Education began Alabama College Application Week nine years ago with a goal of increasing Alabama’s college application and enrollment numbers. The event is especially aimed at encouraging first-generation and low-income students to apply to college. Free applications only apply to Alabama students that apply to participating colleges and universities. More than 50 post-secondary institutions in Alabama participated in the event.

“During this event, local high schools will be hosting special college application celebrations with students submitting applications to colleges,” said Alabama College Application Campaign (ALCAC) Coordinator Dr. Monica P. Mack. “Last year, more than 200 Alabama schools participated and nearly 28,000 students applied to colleges nationwide.”

LBWCC President Dr. Brock Kelley was on hand to speak to Luverne High School seniors of the importance of higher education and to assist with the application process. Dr. Kelley stresses that any post-secondary education is beneficial, whether a plan includes a four-year university, a two-year community college or taking a six-week training program. Dr. Kelley also said, “College looks different for everyone.”
